ASTM Begins Work on New Specification for Butanol for Blending with Gasoline

ASTM Subcommittee D02.A0 has begun work on a new specification (ASTM WK30211) for butanol for blending with gasolines for use as a fuel in automotive spark-ignition engines.

This specification covers butanol intended to be blended with unleaded gasolines at 1 to 12.5 volume%.

Multiple companies (Gevo, BP/Dupont, Cobalt, etc) are working on technology to develop butanol to commercial scale for blend use in spark ignition automotive engine fuel. (Some companies are also exploring the use of butanol as a precursor to replacement hydrocarbon fuels.)

ASTM intends that the specification help industry/engine manufacturers/certification groups to establish a standard on which to operate.
