Oxford YASA Motors axial flux motor yields money, monster torque *UPDATE

On receipt of their second tranche of &ound;1.45 million worth of funding ($2.3 million U.S. at today's exchange rate), Oxford YASA Motors has put out a press release that contains some revelatory information about the startup's tech and their lengthening list of application developments. Expected performance improvements and a growing customer list truly make this a company to watch.

Their product, an award-winning axial flux electric motor which features a yokeless and segmented armature (YASA), originally created for the Morgan LIFEcar, has since undergone significant development and has been used in several other programs such as the Delta Motorsport E-4, Westfield's iRacer and Electroengine's ZE Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-3 ePower. Over the next year we're told to expect to see the motor integrated into more racing machines, including a TTXGP-contending electric motorcycle. Wowsa!

So why is this motor such a hot property? It's all about specific torque. That's the amount of twisting power per kilogram of motor weight. That figure for the YASA, which weighs 23 kilograms (50.71 lbs) and has a certified dynamometer rated peak torque of 700 Newton meters (516 pound feet), is currently 30 Nm/kg. The next generation is expected to increase that to 40 Nm/kg. Truly impressive and potentially revolutionary if the company's statements about volume production dramatically reducing costs hold true.
