Avera previews new 3-cylinder diesel with integrated electric motor

Stealthy startup Avera Motors, which began teasing its prototypes last month, has provided Diesel Power with an exclusive peek at its first engine: a 3-cylinder, common rail unit with a single overhead camshaft and an electric motor integrated into the front of the engine for charging batteries and generating power to assist the engine.

The engine will be mated either a manual or automatic transmission. Diesel Power will be providing more details in the coming weeks.

Avera CEO RJ Scaringe characterizes the prototype as “a vehicle with supercar-like handling, aggressive looks, an affordable price tag, and Prius-beating efficiency.”
