At Hannover Messe 2011, the world’s “foremost technology event,” Siemens presented one of its projects called “Contactless Charging of Battery-Electric Vehicles.” Developed in conjunction with BMW, Siemens’ inductive charging system will be tested under real-world conditions by the German Environment Ministry in the city of Berlin beginning this June.
Siemens’ contactless charging station is connected to the grid by wires buried underground. A secondary coil is attached to an electrified vehicle and a charge, induced by a magnetic field, is sent across an air gap of up to six inches. The wireless charging process is claimed to be more than 90 percent efficient.
Starting in May, a prototype 3.6 kW contactless charger will be tested. Then, in June, the test trials in Berlin, which aim to determine if modifications are needed before integrating the inductive charging system into mass-produced vehicles, will kick off.
