BMW i “born electric”

BMW has updated its plans for electrification by announcing the formation of the BMW i sub brand, as well as updated names for the first two plug-ins to be sold under the i brand.

Nothing really new in this report, but at least we know the names of BMW’s first plug-ins.

Sometime in 2013, BMW will launch both the i3 and i8 plug-in vehicles. Up to now, the i3 has been called the Megacity Concept, while the i8 has been called the Efficient Dynamics Concept.

The BMW i3, therefore, will be a small electric car designed for urban mobility, while the BMW i8 will be a full performance plug-in hybrid. Aside from their electric powertrains, both i’s will also an utilize aluminum chassis and a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic body to help reduce weight.
