The United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC), a research collaboration between Chrysler Group, Ford Motor and General Motors, has awarded A123 Systems an $8 million, 24-month contract, which the firm will use to continue its quest to develop its patented Nanophosphate lithium-ion battery systems. A123 Systems touts its Nanophosphate cell technology as a smaller, lighter, lower-cost alternative to more traditional li-ion battery cells. A123 Systems foresees a future where its Nanophosphate batteries, which apparently offer improved cold-cranking capabilities and an increased ability to capture energy via a car’s regenerative braking system, power conventional hybrid vehicles.
For A123 Systems, this marks the third time that the firm has been awarded a contract by the USABC. In 2006, the USABC announced a $15-million, 36-month contract with A123 to develop its Nanophosphate battery technology. In 2008, A123 was awarded a $12.5 million contract related to the development of technology for plug-in hybrid vehicles.
