The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) will reveal results from phase two of its Future Steel Vehicle (FSV) program at the 10th Annual Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, MI on Wednesday, May 18th.

FSV is a global program that aims to develop lightweight steel auto body concepts for vehicles with advanced powertrains, be they plug-in hybrid setups, electric-only systems or hydrogen fuel cell assemblies. The program aims to introduce advanced steel grades that will reduce a vehicle’s mass while increasing its structural integrity.

Ronald Krupitzer, automotive market vice president for SMDI, touts the advancements in steel, claiming that:

We are just scratching the surface on steel lightweighting. Weight reduction will be important to these newly designed powertrains. Car manufacturers will use structural mass reduction to reduce battery and motor sizes. Therefore, the choice of material will become critical.

The multi-million dollar FSV project is expected to continue for at least the next ten years.
