Electrovaya logoElectrovaya, a developer of lithium-ion battery systems, has announced the launch of a product line targeted at solving the energy storage challenges that utilities are faced with today. Electrovaya’s Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (LIBESS), a smart grid-capable unit, stores excess electrical energy that flows in during off-peak periods and then cranks out power during times of peak demand

The modular energy storage system is scalable from 1 MWh to 100 MWh and incorporates Electrovaya’s lithium-ion Super Polymer cell technology. Electrovaya’s chief executive officer, Dr. Sankar Das Gupta, describes the usefulness of its LIBESS like this:

The problem for utilities is that electricity must be used as it is produced and often too much is produced when demand is low – especially with respect to renewable power. Electrovaya’s Energy Storage System is the critical link that brings together supply and demand, drastically increasing the viability of renewable energy sources.

For now, Electrovaya markets its LIBESS at utility companies. However, we predict that many plug-in vehicle owners will soon discover that an energy storage system similar to Electrovaya’s setup could reduce their charging costs.
