Indian trucking industry plies about 5.6 million vehicles and is in need of about 7-8 lakh new truck drivers a year as per an Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training survey. About 80% of freight in India is roadways based rather than rail, and trucks are responsible for most of the carriage.
