A lawyer for a Utah long-haul truck driver charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women is asking a federal judge on to throw out much of the evidence against her client, claiming he was unlawfully detained in Minnesota. Assistant Federal Defender Vanessa Ramos says in court documents that commercial vehicle inspectors “effected a baseless traffic stop” in March and held Timothy Jay Vafeades without reasonable suspicion until Minnesota State Patrol officers arrived.
