The continuing viability of the independent contractor truck driver model has been under siege by state and federal regulatory agencies as well as by private litigation against numerous transportation companies. The misclassification efforts have been spearheaded or supported, in substantial part, by the federal government, which has in recent years shifted positions on the issue of independent contractor status and targeted companies that operate with independent contractors.
