Economic Watch: September Retail Imports Strong

Import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports should be at near-peak levels this month even as retailers work to cope with the Hanjin Shipping bankruptcy , according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released Friday by the trade group the National Retail Federation and the consulting firm Hackett Associates. Ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.63 million 20-foot equivalent units in July, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available.
